A software engineer from Lissycasey was sentenced to six months in prison by Ennis Circuit Court for possessing child sexual abuse material. Ennis Circuit Court has sentenced David Molloy, a software engineer from Lissycasey and a married father of three, to six months in prison for possessing child sexual abuse material. The court heard that Molloy had 36 videos and 77 images of child pornography , as defined by the Child Trafficking and Porn Act 1998, on his mobile phone. The offences occurred at his Co Clare home on September 18th, 2022.
Judge Francis Comerford expressed his revulsion at the nature of the material, stating he could not avoid a custodial sentence given the circumstances. Molloy's parents were present in court and visibly distressed during the sentencing. The judge extended his sympathy to them. The Garda online exploitation unit was alerted to Molloy's online behavior by UK police, leading to a search of his home. Det Garda Ruth O’Sullivan testified that two mobile phones were recovered, revealing sexually explicit images of children and other materials involving child exposure. Specifically, there were 33 videos of category one child sexually explicit material and three videos of category two child exposure. Molloy initially denied any knowledge of the material found on his phone during questioning. However, he ultimately pleaded guilty on the morning his trial was scheduled to begin last October and had been on bail since that time.
