Beirut-Rafic Hariri airport is Lebanon’s only commercial airport and, for most people, the only way out of the country

Ahead of Israel’s Monday night announcement that it had begun “targeted” ground operations in southern Lebanon, people were anxiously awaiting their opportunity to flee.

After a recent strike in Dahiyeh, Middle East Airlines , which is one of the last remaining airlines operating flights from the airport, also insisted that the airport is safe. While countries like the UK, US and others have been discussing the potential for evacuation, their official advice has remained for citizens to try and leave with commercial flights while they can.

One option is to travel by sea to nearby Cyprus, which is just under 150 miles away and a roughly six-hour journey by boat. “It’s for anyone who wants to take advantage of it,” he said. “We provide security for safety, we have full insurance… Obviously working with Western companies, you have to have all these checks and balances and there are all these hoops you have to go through.”For others, travelling by bus or car to Jordan, via Syria, has emerged as another, more affordable option.
