Families in the Solon City School District were informed via email Monday night that the deadline for parents to opt their children in for bus transportation for the 2024-25 school year is May 31.

Updated: May. 14, 2024, 11:21 a.m.Superintendent Fred Bolden explains the three scenarios that the Solon City School District’s transportation team has developed, based on the number of drivers it will have in August to start the school year, to the Board of Education Monday . SOLON , Ohio -- Despite aggressive recruitment efforts, the Solon City School District does not have enough bus drivers to provide its current level of transportation service in the next school year.

“With that communication, we are also going to be sending out the documentations of where the cuts will need to happen if we have to do that based on our staffing.”form is also available, he said. The deadline for that submission is July 8. “So if you live within a mile, you will no longer be getting transportation and it will be a parent’s responsibility to transport the student,” Bolden said.

The service level provided by each scenario still falls well below the state minimum requirements of two miles for K-8 students and no required transportation for high school students, Bolden said. “If we can get up to that number of drivers that we need, so that we can maintain service the way that we’re doing it this year, that’s what we’re going to do,” he said.

“We really need people to opt in now so that we have a good idea of the number of people that want to ride the bus.”
