X-Rays and UV examinations of Psittacosaurus skin shine light on dinosaur transition from reptile to bird.

Studied dinosaur specimen njues-10 under natural and UV light showing the orange-yellow fluorescence of the fossil skin. The question of whether some dinosaurs were covered with either scales or feathers has a new answer: both.

The findings help explain how some dinosaur species transitioned from reptiles to more bird-like creatures, McNamara, said in a press release. Soft skin supporting feathers combined with other areas covered by scales probably provided an evolutionary advantage.
