A man living in the Liaoning province in northeastern China used deepfake technology to imitate his deceased father and prevent breaking the news of this death to his 91-year-old grandmother.
Nevertheless, the grandson, whose surname is Sun, had to go through a fair amount of trouble to use the technology. After his father’s death, Sun had to go through his father’s photos to find relevant ones that could be used to train the AI. After the diagnosis, Sun spent his time taking his father to hospitals in the country and abroad and had been avoiding sorting his stuff since his death.
Before showing the video to the older woman, the family pretended the grandson traveled to Beijing. When the video was ready, it wasn’t shown directly to the grandmother but to an aunt in the family to check if it resembled the deceased man.to make the video but had to imitate his father’s voice in the clip. In the video, he used his words carefully. The video addressed the grandmother and said that the hospital could not cure the disease but had brought it under control and that he was fine.
