Celebrity makeup artist Helen Dowsley's son Drew, 30, spent Christmas at home just three months after a horrific train accident left him for dead for seven hours. Drew had been struggling with his mental health and was turned away from a hospital, only to be hit by a train hours later. He suffered catastrophic injuries, including the loss of one hand, three brain bleeds, broken ribs, a shattered spine, and a fractured chest plate.
Helen, who was working on the Australian reality TV show Farmer Wants A Wife at the time, had advised him to seek medical help, but was devastated to learn he had been turned away and later admitted with life-changing injuries. She has now revealed the full extent of his injuries, describing his body as 'absolutely shattered'. Helen explained: 'They have to put a steel plate on his wrist to hold his thumb onto his wrist. There's no other skeleton in his hand. There's no hand. Just a large piece of skin.' She revealed the devastating extent of his injuries, saying his left hand was 'degloved' and couldn't be saved. Ms Dowsley has been openly critical of the hospital that turned her son away, expressing her shock at being told other patients 'needed their help more'. She believes he was 'clearly in a state of psychosis' when he sought help, branding his treatment as 'absolutely horrific' and admitting she 'still can't' get over it. Ms Dowsley shared her mix of anger and sadness over the fact that her son was denied assistance when he was so unwell he 'threw himself in front of a train'. Despite her joy at having him home for Christmas, she's burdened with worry about the future costs of his medical care and necessary surgeries.
