If the trio do appear in Sonic the Hedgehog 3's post-credits scene, they'll likely be motivated by the Master Emerald or a similar goal to find a way to Earth. This would give them an excuse to show up in the movie, still maintaining their thief personas but also having closer connections to Sonic's homeworld. It would explain the script on the temple while also aligning their personalities with their video game counterparts.
