Summary Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has the chance to introduce a forgotten character to the movie franchise thanks to Shadow's new game. The story of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 revolves around introducing the Ultimate Lifeform to the movie franchise, specifically his awakening 50 years after being created by Gerald Robotnik. The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 post-credits scene hinted that inspiration will be pulled from Shadow's debut game, Sonic Adventure 2.
Sonic x Shadow Generations Reintroduces A Rare Game Character The Character First Appeared In A 2003 Game The next mainline Sonic game is going to be Sonic x Shadow Generations, a remaster of the 2011 game Sonic Generations with an added storyline for Shadow. In the game, Black Doom from 2005's Shadow the Hedgehog returns to torment the Ultimate Lifeform with his past.
In a later game for the same console, titled Sonic Advance 3, a new Sonic villain was introduced, an antagonistic Gizoid known as Gemerl. Created by Dr. Robotnik using Emerl's data, Gemerl also went rogue, stopping only after being defeated and safely reprogrammed to his normal function, thus turning him back into Emerl. As evidenced by both games and iterations of the character, Emerl has a strong connection to the Robotnik family, as well as Shadow's backstory aboard the ARK.
Although it's unclear if Sonic the Hedgehog 3 features another villain or even a hero in the form of Emerl, the movie should make reference to him for the sake of consistency with Shadow's game backstory. While his appearance doesn't need to be a big part of the movie, him showing up would be a good way to set the stage for a potential Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
