Sony’s smartphones are exceptional in many ways, but they’ve never quite become mainstream. Partly that’s down to focusing on more advanced photography than most users could be bothered to learn. So, how has Sony learnt lessons with its new flagship and, crucially, are the changes enough?Sony’s Xperia phones come in several grades with the iterations of Xperia 1 being the top-flight option. Standout characteristics are a 4K display with extra-long 21:9 screen ratio and complex camera apps.
Although it looks that bit more conventional, this is still unmistakably a Sony. The front-facing camera sits outside the display so that when you’re viewing photos or video, there’s no missing spot. There’s another telltale Sony characteristic: the inclusion of a 3.5mm headphone jack which is rare on high-end smartphones. And there’s the SIM card tray that doesn’t need a tool to open it, only a fingernail.
The software has also been radically improved, with the somewhat daunting multiple Pro photography and video apps merged into one, more approachable app, though with significant pro options for those who want them.
