‘Joan’ is inspired by the unbelievable true story of Joan Hannington, a prolific diamond thief who became known as “the Godmother”.
. Now, though, she seems poised for her first major return to TV since the conclusion of the HBO fantasy epic. The project in question? A thriller about one of the most infamous figures in London’s criminal underworld of the 1980s., due to air on ITV’s new streaming service ITVX, is inspired by the unbelievable true story of Joan Hannington, a prolific diamond thief who became known as “the Godmother”.
. Notably, the writer also met with Hannington while crafting the series, suggesting that this depiction of her meteoric rise will delve deep into her backstory and motivations, painting a more complex picture of a figure in recent history who could otherwise be reduced to a caricatured villain. Filming is currently underway, with ITVX releasing a first look at the series on 18 May. Captured against the backdrop of a roadside diner, it sees Turner posing opposite’s Frank Dillane, who plays a London antiques dealer caught up in her crime spree. Leaning against a Ford Capri, her hair cropped and dyed bleach-blonde, Turner looks every inch the ’80s power player – and about as far from a Stark of Winterfell as possible.
