Inspired by the real-life Joan Hannington , this six-part ITV series sees Sophie Turner explore the life of the notorious jewel thief , trapped in a marriage with a violent criminal. Talking about the upcoming series, Sophie says: “There was so much about the show that appealed. First of all, it was a story about a real woman. Joan had an obscene appetite for adventure and doing new things. I was drawn as well to the way she could compartmentalise her life.
The series is set in the 80s, where Joan’s life is on a downward spiral until a chance arises for her to escape her husband and create a new life for herself and her daughter. Game Of Thrones star Sophie plays Joan, taking on different identities and making new acquaintances along the way, including Laura Aikman’s character, Val.
“Val believes she’ll show Joan how things are done,” says Laura. “That she’ll take Joan under her wing, but it doesn’t work out like that – Joan’s not interested. And Val ends up feeling resentment towards Joan for that, as well as a strange respect for her.” To get into character, Laura creates playlists and she had a specific song in mind for Val. “This particular playlist was really fun because it’s the 80s,” she says. “I was a kid in the 80s, and I remember my parents listening to that music, so it’s quite nostalgic for me. For Val, I heard Dolly Parton’s, Here You Come Again, about someone coming back and hurting you – which is where Val is.”
