Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick warns public to follow adviceLive reporting by Greg Heffer, political reporterI had employers phoning me in tears at the prospect of having to let so many people go'09:36Mr Hewittt says:"We always have plans to be able to work with not just the military but all sorts of other agencies that can assist us.
"I'm getting daily reporting to understand precisely where we are in terms of the numbers of our officers and staff that are unable to work either because they are sick or self-isolating." Martin Hewitt, the chair of the National Police Chief's Council, says the police will be"prioritising" how they operate during the coronavirus crisis, in the face of possible staffing shortages.
"This was not an economic problem when it started, so we have a fundamentally strong economy", Ms Fairnbairn says. He says:"I have to say the amount of money that has now been found to invest in our economy is great, is huge and it's what I was condemned for asking for to deal with austerity and poverty in Britain three months ago.""The principle of caring for everybody in society is now absolutely centre stage."08:52He tells people to"listen, listen, listen" to the advice being given.
He says:"If people don't follow that advice we'll clearly have to follow other options, but none of us want to go down that route."Asked if the government is playing"catch-up" in its response to coronavirus, Mr Jenrick says the government has followed expert advice and taken measures at the"right moment".
