The Australian tennis player may have a bad attitude, but Wimbledon has a bad approach to kit

in themselves. And, while it could be interpreted as a choice purely driven by fashion, Air Jordans were born in the world of elite sport. Kyrgios is simply joining a raft of top tier athletes that have all endorsed the 1985 lodestar: Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, LeBron James and, of course, Michael Jordan. They might all be basketball players. But that's besides the point. The Air Jordan, with its lightweight and functional design, isn't solely limited to one type of court.

The alleged violation also lays bare the backwardness of Wimbledon at large. As the rest of the world moves on and rethinks its approach to getting dressed, the World Cup of tennis is still stuck in 1934, and its handling of Kyrgios' mild transgression exposes its own unsavoury heritage as a sport of the upper class with select, exclusive rules for a select, exclusive stratum of people.

Of course, this may all be a clever PR ploy to add some fire into what is, unarguably, one of the more sedate sporting events on the calendar. It gets people talking about something with a distinct lack of talking points. And we're not criticisingeither. They're great, especially if you want to look like the himbo Hamptons tennis instructor that may or may not be giving some added value to his pay cheque's wife.

Still, in 2022, they shouldn't be enforced upon anyone. Penalise the spitting. Penalise the swearing. But a pair of Air Jordans? Sorry Wimbledon, you're just being a bad sport.
