Power cuts that can last 12 hours a day are forcing those who can in South Africa to get creative about how they spend their working day
, and a consistent stream of tourists taking photos, sit remote workers, tapping away on their laptops and making business calls from 1,086m in the sky.
Despite ample, year-round solar and wind capabilities, South Africans are tied to state providers by law. This week, citizens were told to expect at least three more years of loadshedding as government parties failed to reach an agreement about the crisis.
Table Mountain is a case in point, favoured by a suitably smug group for the view, but also because, as the city’s biggest tourist attraction, the mountain cafe’s generators are robust, promising what the locals refer to as the elusive “UPS” – unlimited power supply. But down at the waterfront central tourism district, hotel lobbies, cafe chains and even gyms have all become coveted spots for the same reason.
