Eskom, South Africa's primary electricity supplier, is grappling with an 'existential crisis' due to a record R95 billion ($5.2 billion) in unpaid bills from local municipalities. This surge in debt, despite Eskom's recent progress in narrowing losses and ending rolling blackouts, threatens its financial stability and ability to improve infrastructure. Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa warned that the problem is not solely Eskom's but a national one, as unpaid bills ultimately burden the government.
