AUSTIN, Texas — Whether you've lived in Austin for decades or you moved here last week, commuting through South Austin on I-35 can break even the strongest spirit. recently put a social media call out online and received hundreds of messages from viewers venting about feeling stuck with limited options when driving into Bluff Springs approaching Slaughter Lane on I-35.
The most recent example is on March 19 when a four vehicle crash on I-35 northbound at Stassney Lane created a five mile back up, causing residents to be stuck in standstill traffic for hours. "I just moved to Austin and I will say Google lied to me about drive times, it said my commute to work would be like 40 min, it's often 80 minutes. The bulk of the traffic is almost always south of the city," one driver, Emily Forsyth, said.
One longtime Kyle resident, Stephanie Hernandez, said she remembers one day on I-35 where an 18-wheeler was jack-knifed in front of her, leaving her nowhere to go. "I have been stuck in traffic before for four hours when there's been a major collision in the Kyle/Buda area," Hernandez said. "I just couldn't do it anymore, so luckily I was able to obtain a position where I can work from home and only have to come into the office occasionally. But even then it's having to plan accordingly," Hernandez said. , where crews are adding two lanes to I-35 from SH-71 from Ben White Boulevard to SH 45 southeast.
