South Korea's National Assembly voted to impeach acting president Han Duck-soo, just two weeks after impeaching President Yoon Suk Yeol. The vote was 192-0, with the governing party boycotting the process.

South Korea has voted to impeach its acting leader Han Duck-soo, just two weeks after impeaching President Yoon Suk Yeol. The opposition-controlled National Assembly approved the impeachment motion in a 192-0 vote on Friday. Governing party politicians boycotted the vote. Prime Minister Han took over the role after President Yoon was impeached by parliament following his failed attempt to impose martial law on December 3.

Han had been tasked with leading South Korea out of its political turmoil, but opposition MPs said the acting president was refusing demands to complete Yoon’s impeachment process. The impeachment means Han is stripped of the powers and duties of the president until the Constitutional Court decides whether to dismiss or reinstate him. The court is currently reviewing whether to uphold Yoon’s earlier impeachment. Lawmakers from the ruling People Power Party (PPP) accused the impeachment vote of being “invalid” after National Assembly speaker Woo Won-shik said only 151 votes – a simple majority – would be needed to pass the impeachment bill. This meant the motion could pass without votes needed from ruling lawmakers, unlike the previous impeachment which required 200 votes. Most South Korean officials can be impeached by the National Assembly with a simple majority vote, but a president’s impeachment needs the support of two-thirds. There are no specific laws on the impeachment of an acting president. PPP MPs shouted “abuse of power!” at the Speaker in response and called for him to resign. Most of the PPP’s officials boycotted the vote. Han, who was appointed prime minister by Yoon, subsequently clashed with the main liberal opposition Democratic Party after assuming the acting presidency. He was accused of pushing back against opposition-led efforts to fill three vacant seats on the Constitutional Court to restore its full nine-member bench ahead of its ruling on Yoon’s impeachment
