The former National Tyres and Auto Care Centre in South Shore, Blackpool is being demolished
Proposals for a new car park in Blackpool's South Shore have got the go ahead from town hall planners. The scheme will see a 33-space pay and display car park provided on the corner of Bond Street and Wthnell Road following the demolition of the former National Tyres and Auto Care Centre on the site.
Consultation found a majority of respondents in favour of the investment with people saying a car park would support local businesses, alleviate on-street parking issues and provide safe parking. Objections were made on the basis the development could increase congestion, with some calls made for the site to be developed for housing or retail instead.
But in making their decision, using delegated powers, planners said a number of businesses would benefit, while the “demolition of the former building on site has resulted in the removal of an unsightly run-down building as well as associated paraphernalia .”The car park will include two electric vehicle charging points, motorcycle parking, entrance barriers and lighting with access from Bond Street.
Calls have been made recently by ward councillor Diane Mitchell for more regeneration in the Bond Street and Waterloo Road area of Blackpool amid concerns of economic decline in recent years. The council is currently seeking funding for the Waterloo Masterplan to support investment in the neighbourhood.
