South Western Ambulance Service declares critical incident as post-Christmas pressures strain the NHS

The South Western Ambulance Service has become the second service in two days to declare a critical incident as “extreme pressures” following the Christmas break left hundreds waiting for ambulances. Director of operations Wayne Darch said that people with non-life threatening conditions may be directed to an “alternative service” – with patients urged to visit a minor injuries unit instead of calling ambulances “for urgent but not life-threatening conditions and injuries such as sprains, fractures and burns”.

He added: “If the condition of a patient is not life-threatening we may direct them to an alternative service. So please help us by accessing the right service for the care you need.
