Farhan Khan, a homeowner in Southampton, has been fined and received a criminal conviction for putting up an illegal garden fence. The 7-foot wooden fence, put up without planning permission, was described by neighbours as unsightly and prison-like.
A homeowner in Southampton has faced both a fine and a criminal conviction for installing an illegal garden fence. Farhan Khan replaced a green hedge with a 7-foot wooden fence in 2020, without obtaining planning permission . Neighbours described the fence as unsightly and compared it to a prison wall. Khan applied for retrospective permission which was denied, leading to a £622 fine and a criminal conviction for failing to comply with a Planning Enforcement Notice.
Neighbours remain divided on the decision, with some deeming the fence necessary for privacy and others considering it a blight on the street
