Southampton City Council is implementing a six-month trial of a pedestrianization scheme on Portswood Road, restricting car traffic to improve air quality and living standards. The scheme will allow only buses, taxis, and cyclists on a stretch of the road from Westridge Road to St Denys Road spur, operating Monday to Saturday during peak hours. Preparatory work is expected to last three weeks. The project has faced opposition from residents concerned about a one-mile diversion for 12,000 car journeys daily. The council insists the plans were developed after community consultation and advice from a local steering group.
