A Canadian company has signed a deal to test its rocket in South Australia next year. If successful, it will be the first time a rocket reaches space from the remote Koonibba base.

The South Australian space launch service provider has partnered with Canadian firm Reaction Dynamics to launch a rocket from Koonibba, on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula, to an altitude of 125 kilometres above the Earth’s surface.Southern Launch conducted the first successful commercial rocket launch from Australian soil in Koonibba in 2020.There are other launches planned for the range, but this would be the first to reach space.
The launch will involve the inaugural flight of the 7.3-metre Aurora rocket, which uses hybrid rocket technology."This mission the aim is to get it 125km above the surface of the Earth which would mean it's crossed the 100km line which technically means it’s reached space," said Southern Launch communications and media manager Amy Featherston.
On its website, Reaction Dynamics says it offers “dedicated launches at a third of the price of competitive small satellite launchers, while offering lower environmental impacts and a more responsive approach".The announcement comes as a decision on a proposal for a new rocket-launching facility more than 400km south of Koonibba Test Range, called theThe project is based about 30km from Port Lincoln and has faced significant resistance from local residents and conservation groups.
