As he learned about the might of the Texas High School Coaches Association’s annual convention, with more than 17,000 coaches gathering at a single site, Southland Conference commissioner Chris Grant started searching for a chance to link. Taking over as the Southland ’s leader in April 2022, Grant helped the league find steady ground after teetering on the brink of viability.

settlement, Grant suggested the Southland could be a landing spot for players who have their opportunities constricted, including those from Texas high schools. “I knew this was where I wanted to be, especially with our relationship with UIW,” Grant said. “We hadn’t really put our flag in the ground when it comes to this side of Texas — here, to Corpus Christi, and now UTRGV — and we’re able to prioritize that.
