Axel Rudakubana, convicted of the brutal murders of three young girls and attempted murders of ten others, has been transferred to Belmarsh prison. He will be held in a 'bare cell' with minimal furnishings and restricted movements, facing a constant threat of violence.
Axel Rudakubana , the Southport killer, has been transferred to one of the UK's most notorious prisons, Belmarsh . He will be a prime target for attacks from other inmates due to the horrific nature of his crimes. Rudakubana, who was 17 at the time of his offences, was convicted of murdering three young girls and attempting to kill ten others. He will be kept in a 'bare cell' with minimal furnishings, wearing a paper jumpsuit to prevent self-harm.
His movements will be severely restricted, spending 23 hours a day in his cell with only an hour in a yard where he will be constantly monitored by other inmates. A former prisoner told The Sun that Rudakubana will face constant threats, with other inmates eager to inflict violence upon him. Rudakubana's age means he will not receive a whole life tariff, but the judge imposed a minimum term of 52 years, one of the highest on record for a killer of his age. This decision has been referred to the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme, with many questioning the severity of the punishment. Rudakubana's case highlights the challenges faced by prisons in protecting high-profile inmates from vengeful attacks
