Meet Merseyside's newest MP as Southport turns red for the first time in history

Patrick Hurley has been elected as Labour's first ever Member of Parliament for Southport. Mr Hurley defeated Conservative Damien Moore, who has held the seaside seat since 2017, as Labour swept to victory in the general election.

The win in Southport means that for the first time ever, the Labour Party holds every single seat in the Merseyside conurbation. A former Liverpool City councillor who is originally from Prescot, in Knowsley, Mr Hurley represented the Mossley Hill ward in the south of the city from 2011 until May 2023 when he lost out in a bid to be elected in the newly formed Waterfront South ward.

"It felt like I had both hands tied behind my back. I decided then I wanted to move into national politics so I could help more people."
