Former MP and local councillor John Pugh painted a dreary picture of a "once thriving" town's future as he addressed a full council chamber this month, casting doubt on the town's claim to its "seaside" identity. Against concerns for the iconic Southport pier, which has been closed for over two years, and worries about the "muddiness" of its once pristine beach, Councillor Pugh put forward a motion reflecting his unease.
The ambitious £73m Marine Lake Events Centre project is making waves in Southport, with expectations to draw in 288,000 visitors annually.
She believes that while change is necessary, the right solution remains elusive: "It needs something, but I couldn't tell you what, but it obviously needs something. We'll have to wait and see what they come up with and I just hope I live long enough to see an improvement." Highlighting the overlooked spaces, he pointed out, "There's plenty of empty units in amazing buildings just lying empty and also in a bad condition. We should be lowering rates and rent and supporting new businesses and spending some money on refurbishing these existing spaces."
Nestled on Market Street, The Plant Room currently finds itself amidst massive redevelopment efforts aimed at pedestrianising the vicinity, enhancing connectivity, and crafting novel communal spaces initiatives met with enthusiasm by neighbouring traders hopeful for boosted pedestrian traffic.
