Liam Hendriks is preparing to return to the White Sox after likely pitching with cancer last year. And he isn't looking for pity, unless he’s the one initiating it. JRFegan on Hendriks' journey back to the mound:

“Knowing that that was my last treatment was a huge bonus. I don’t think I would, it would have been a lot harder with me not having an end date,” Hendriks said. “It would have been a lot more difficult. Luckily that was my last treatment, and all I had to do after that was get a bone marrow biopsy to make sure that everything was out of my marrow and we were good to go.”

Hendriks spent part of Wednesday’s media session describing moments where he writhed in pain and agony while his wife Kristi watched by his bedside. He ate anti-nausea lollipops to combat the side effects. Over the course of his treatment, there were lumps found in his hips that dwarfed the growths in his neck, making Hendriks believe they had been growing for longer.

“There was always the chance I pitched damn near all year with lymphoma in my system,” Hendriks said. “I’d like to think that was the reason I struggled to recover, and the end of the year I was damn near limping to the finish line. But yeah, that’s one thing obviously can come through. Who knows how much that actually affected me. We’ll find out when I get into — as long as Pedro is in here — four or five games in a row and move forward with that. I don’t think it helped.

Pedro Grifol and a large collection of White Sox teammates and coaches attended Hendriks’ press conference. Hendriks spent a good chunk of his 25 minutes crediting his wife for her emotional support dragging him through, detailing the gifts and help he received from former and current teammates, and the “interesting” cards he received from children.
