SP Energy Networks outlines a five-year plan to modernize Scotland's power grid, aiming to lower household energy bills and support the UK's green energy ambitions.
SP Energy Networks, a subsidiary of ScottishPower, is submitting a £10.6 billion five-year business plan to energy regulator Ofgem for the period April 2026 to March 2031. The plan focuses on new and upgraded transmission infrastructure in central and southern Scotland , including 12 new substations, 450km of upgraded circuits, 87km of overhead lines, and 35km of underground cables.
SP Energy Networks claims this investment will increase the country's power transmission capacity, making the network more resilient, and connecting up to 19 gigawatts of new green power. The firm also anticipates reducing constraints costs, leading to annual household savings of £167 by 2030. In addition to the infrastructure upgrades, the company plans to double its transmission workforce, creating 1,400 new directly employed jobs and supporting 11,000 further jobs. SP Energy Networks has already awarded £5.4 billion worth of supply chain contracts to 19 firms, mostly UK and Irish, and cites research from the Centre for Energy Policy at the University of Strathclyde indicating the plan could contribute £2 billion annually to the UK economy.
