Spain 's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has proposed a ban on non-EU citizens buying property in the country, citing growing concerns about the impact of tourism and foreign buyers on Spain 's residents. This proposal follows the government's decision to scrap the golden visa scheme, which allowed non-EU nationals to gain residency through property or investment. The golden visa scheme is set to be replaced in April. Sánchez also suggested a 100% tax on property deals involving non-EU buyers.
These measures come amidst growing frustration over the effects of mass tourism in Spain. Thousands of Spaniards protested against tourism last year, partly driven by the country's housing crisis.
