BREAKING: Spain passes China as country with second highest coronavirus death toll
In China, where the outbreak began, 3,281 people have died, according to its National Health Commission.
Italy has the highest death toll in the world at 6,820, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University. It reached the grim milestone last week, on the same day that authorities in Hubei, the global source of the pandemic, said there had been no new cases. China has started lifting the last controls that confined tens of millions of people to their homes in the province at the center of its virus outbreak.
In stark contrast, a top Spanish health official, Fernando Simon, said that he expects the number of Covid-19 cases to continue increasing in the coming days.
