Barcelona residents spray tourists with water guns during anti-tourism protest. Thousands took to the streets on 6th July to protest mass tourism in the city, with many claiming tourism has made the city 'unliveable' for residents.
Movement against over-tourism across Spain continues to gain momentumFurious protesters unfurled a large banner on a Costa Blanca beach to call for tourists to 'go home' in the latest stunt against perceived over-tourism in Spain .
It was the latest in a string of organised demonstrations across Spain aimed at deterring visitors and raising awareness of the plight of those in popular cities.
The twin actions came two days after residents of a Menorcan village dubbed the 'Spanish Mykonos' rejected a feared tourist ban, although one in three of the 195 homeowners favoured a prohibition 24/7. That means 2024 is shaping up to be another record year for Spain, already the world's second most visited country behind France, making it likely it will beat last year's high of 85 million tourists, when numbers exceeded pre-pandemic levels.
The first major protest in Alicante - not far from the Barraca Cove beach - took place last month, as hundreds of locals took to the streets to voice their concerns about overtourism. 'What is not named does not exist and it is essential we make it clear that there are many of us residents of Alicante who demand that limits be placed on the tourism industry.'
Rents rose by 18% in June from a year earlier in tourist cities such as Barcelona and Madrid, according to the property website Idealista. Photos shared exclusively with MailOnline show what one resident said was likely new graffiti calling for tourists to go home on 'recently erected tents'.
'That's the impression I got from it: tourism is not bad in itself, it's the mass tourism and the loss of character and the loss of space for locals to hang around in.' They then used towels and their own bodies to shape the message 'SOS Menorca' on the sand by the waterline. The loungers and umbrellas are taken to the local police station and tourists must pay the equivalent of £210 to retrieve them.
