💻 Spain is planning to launch a digital nomad visa to attract workers, but not everyone wants them to come
The appeal of working in Spain is obvious but digital nomads drive up rents and reduce social cohesion, experts say IN MADRID – Digital nomads push up city centre house rental prices, force local people to move out and erode the community fabric, experts said, as Spain prepares a new law to welcome more ‘laptop entrepreneurs’.
When they arrive in Barcelona, Malaga or the Canary Islands, they often use short-term rental accommodation which is often more expensive than long-term housing contracts, according to academics who have studied this phenomenon. Many nomads head to tourist areas which are more attractive for the clubs, bars and cafes which double as places to work. As they stay for only a few months, few nomads invest in local communities, said experts.
A backlash has started in some areas against nomads in areas of Spain where regional authorities have tried to attract these foreign temporary workers like the Canary Islands.
