Seville council has cut off water to six apartment blocks it says are being used for illegal tourist rentals, as tensions over the impact of mass tourism on Spanish cities mount
A Spanish city council in a holiday hotspot has gained the right to disconnect water supplies for "illegal" tourist apartments amid rising tensions over overtourism.
Officials say water will only be restored when proof is provided that the apartments are being used for legitimate residential purposes. While this firm stance is not expected to be mirrored elsewhere in Spain, cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia have reported rental prices soaring due to high demand from foreign tourists, which is also having a dramatic impact on housing options for locals.
Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni has also signalled that the roughly 10,000 legal holiday lets won't have their licenses renewed after 2028, essentially imposing a ban on second homes in Catalonia's main city. The Canary Islands have already seen fierce protests against mass tourism, echoed by subsequent demonstrations in the likes of Mallorca, Granada, Malaga, and Barcelona. Now there's growing concern among experts that this backlash could spread even further afield.
