Max Verstappen held off one of the home heroes in FP2, but only half a second separated the top 10 during the session... SpanishGP 🇪🇸 F1
The Red Bull driver went 0.170s faster than one of the home heroes at the top of the timesheets in second practice around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg putting in an excellent qualifying simulation to place himself third in the session.
The early part of FP2 saw the majority of drivers head out on track on test Pirelli compounds, with two sets having been made available to each driver as the sport’s tyre manufacturer look to move to a more sturdy construction from the British Grand Prix onwards, with the cars significantly faster than they were last year.
Russell’s troubles continued when he took to the gravel at Turn 10 to avoid the slow Oscar Piastri ahead of him, which angered the Mercedes driver on team radio, though he was able to crawl through and get out of trouble. But with the Mercedes W14 unleashed, signs were promising for Hamilton by setting the fastest first sector of anybody, sitting just a tenth behind Verstappen at the end of the second sector, but a half-second loss in the final sector left him down in the lower reaches of the top 10, before dropping down to an eventual P11.
