A tourist from Spain died after being struck by an elephant at a sanctuary in Thailand.
A Spanish tourist, Blanca Ojanguren Garcia, 22, from Valladolid, died after an elephant at a popular animal sanctuary in Thailand forcefully knocked her over with its trunk. Garcia was bathing an elephant on Friday at the Koh Yao sanctuary on the Thai island of Yao Yai when the incident occurred. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but later died. Local police and the elephant care centre confirmed the incident, and the sanctuary is currently closed.
Reports initially suggested Garcia had been gored by the elephant, but this was later clarified as incorrect. There were around 18 people present at the time of the incident, including Garcia's boyfriend, but no one else was injured. Garcia was a Law and International Relations student at the University of Navarra, living in Taiwan for a six-month study abroad program at Tamkang University. She was expected to complete her undergraduate degree this year. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the consulate in Bangkok was in contact with Garcia's family, and her body has since been transferred to a hospital on the island of Phuket for repatriation procedures.
