Maddy began to suspect she had ADHD when googling the symptoms after her son's teachers thought he might be neurodivergent InYourArea_UK | ADHD
MOTHER AND SON: Maddy with her son, Ben, who is also on the pathway for a diagnosis
Maddy thinks her ADHD lent itself to her 'spending addiction' which led her to build more than £40,000 of debt in her 20s as she was 'constantly craving dopamine' which she got from buying things. She says she sometimes finds having ADHD 'debilitating' and has 'forgotten to pick the kids up from school' because of being easily distracted or absent-minded.
"I had a spending addiction - I think, looking back, I was bad with money at the time because I was constantly craving dopamine and I got dopamine from buying things. The whole thing with ADHD is the brain being deficient in dopamine."In July 2022, Maddy was told by her son’s teachers that he may have ADHD and, after googling the condition, she began to think she may have it too.
Maddy wanted to try medication to help her symptoms but has been on the NHS waiting list for more than a year. She said:"To get the medication privately, it would be over £100 a month, which I just can’t afford, but I’m still waiting to hear from the NHS. It’s so frustrating." However, Maddy also sees the positive side of having ADHD:"It can be amazing - I hyperfocus on my business so much that every day, no matter how much I feel, I push forward because I want to grow this business. I’m incredibly creative and always think outside the box.Expert explains why you should never drink coffee within an hour of waking up
