This costume comeback is far from just a fashion statement, though, as it officially puts Peter Parker in the running to come out on top as the winner in this battle of the symbiotes.
Writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing and artist Greg Land's Venom War: Spider-Man #1 will be available on August 14, 2024. This inaugural issue kicks off the four-issue series, which ties into Marvel’s larger Venom War event to determine the true wearer of the symbiote. “Spider-Man is back in black! It’s an honor and a privilege for the Hivemind to join the masterful Greg Land for this tale of brotherhood in the face of epic, devastating villainy,” Lanzing & Kelly said. They added, “This is the Last Temptation of Black Suit Spider-Man – complete with glimpses into his glorious past, his complicated present, and his dark potential future – and we’re thrilled for fans to finally see what we’ve been cooking up.
What is particularly exciting about this cover is that it confirms the suit isn’t just a black costume but the symbiote itself, as Land depicts the suit peeling away from Parker’s face in a very Venom-esque manner. Particularly notable is that instead of webs, Spider-Man is swinging on chains. This raises the question of whether this is a new development for Parker or merely an artistic choice by Land for the cover.
