Spike Lee and Prince’s estate are being sued over the theme song for 1996 movie Girl 6
Oscar winner Spike Lee has found himself being sued by James Brandon over the theme song for his 1996 movie Girl 6.
Spike had teamed up with Prince on the title track for the film, that stars Theresa Randle as a phone sex operator, but Brandon claims the song is a knock-off of one of his own.reports that Brandon is filing a lawsuit against Lee and Prince’s estate – claiming that he had recorded a song called Phone Sex that had been offered for the movie, which Girl 6’s theme song has audible similarities.
Brandon says the trumpet arrangement and part of the vocals in both tracks are like for like. He claims that the melody for the song’s hook was used in the track for the movie, but the lyrics have been changed to Girl 6 instead.He also claims that his band met with director Spike’s uncle Clarence Lee, who said he would pass their recording of Phone Sex on to Spike to use in one of his movies.Brandon is now suing Lee and Prince’s estate for all profits they made from Girl 6’s theme song.
