The titles of Texu Kim’s compositions are likely to catch your eye: “Sweet, Savory, Spicy!!,” “Spin-Flip,” “fffanfare!!,” “Ominous Omnibus.” His inventive music, which merges disparate elements in seamless ways, will also catch your ear. Kim, an associate professor at San Diego State University since 2020, is in increasing demand as a composer. His work will be featured at more than a dozen concerts this spring.
“Evangelical church music allowed me to almost viscerally understand how to connect music with people's emotions and to become familiar with various genres,” Kim explained. “I think that allowed me to create music combining different cultures. “I have to analyze every single note I'm writing. I think that has to do with chemistry. And there’s this idea of using a small motif, tweaking the motif constantly to create larger-scale music.
