A month after the release of Final Fantasy 14's first chaotic alliance raid, Square Enix has made a surprising change to the ability names associated with one of the boss attacks. The reversal, which appears to be an oversight in the English translation, caused some confusion among players and could lead to further issues in party finders.

Final Fantasy 14's first chaotic alliance raid, a challenging 24-player fight adapted from one of the original A Realm Reborn raids, launched at the end of December, and it's actually quite enjoyable. Even though relying on 23 other players to consistently execute each mechanic feels like an exercise in futility.

But why not make things even more difficult by swapping two ability names nearly a month after the fight's release? That's seemingly the question Square Enix asked itself, because that's precisely what it did. It turns out that two names associated with one of the boss's attacks—either Core-Lateral Phase or Lateral-Core Phase—were reversed in the English translations. Before today's change, the ability name actually indicated the safe spots: Core-Lateral Phase attacked the sides first and then the center, for example, while Lateral-Core Phase did the opposite. Admittedly, this choice felt odd. Typically, abilities like this indicate where the attack will hit first, rather than where it won't. I remember the first time encountering the attack, my thousands of hours spent playing Final Fantasy 14 led me to the opposite of what the name actually conveyed. However, this change came out of nowhere. I checked the known issues section for Patch 7.15 (the one that introduced the chaotic alliance raid), and there's no mention of the names being reversed. It makes one wonder why they waited an entire month to fix this rather than simply issuing a hotfix, especially since it appears to be a straightforward text error. Square Enix claims that the names have been correct in Japanese since launch, suggesting this is an English-only issue. Did they simply overlook it? It's a minor swap, sure, but I have no doubt this will cause more than a few headaches in party finders for the next few weeks. Not just from people fighting muscle memory, like myself, but also from those who may not have even read the patch notes and realized the change occurred. Things will eventually settle down, but hey, Square Enix, perhaps a swifter fix next time? For the sake of party finders everywhere.
