A seaside Scottish town has been named 'the perfect winter staycation destination' by The Mirror. St Andrews in Fife was praised for its historic charm, coastal beauty, golf course, independent shops, and culinary scene.
Now that Christmas is over, many Scots will be needing a holiday after the stress of the festive season. Whether you are keen to get away for Hogmanay, or planning a January break, winter is a great time to treat yourself.
St Andrews sits on Scotland's east coast, around half an hour from Dundee and less than two hours from both Edinburgh and Glasgow. It is perhaps best known as the 'home of golf', with the sport having been played there for more than 600 years. Meanwhile, The Mirror also praised St Andrews' "range of independent shops". Among the stores singled out were the historic Topping & Company bookshop and cashmere specialists Johnstons of Elgin.
Elsewhere, St Andrews' iconic beaches also earned praise — in particular West Sands beach. Famous for being featured in the legendary opening scene of the 1981 film Chariots of Fire, West Sands is popular amongst walkers, runners, and swimmers alike.
