A look ahead to Scarborough Open Air Theatre this summer

Known locally as the North Side, the wooded area behind the town’s glorious North Bay is home to one of the town’s biggest success stories in recent years – the Open Air Theatre.

You can’t help but wonder what the stars of the shows that launched the wondrous new Open Air Theatre back in 1932 would have made of it all. The venue had just been opened by the Lord Mayor of London, and audiences were flocking to see Merrie England, a spectacular comic opera set in the court of Queen Elizabeth I, all performed by a cast of local amateurs.

There was still a little bit of life left in the old dog yet, though. Through the 1960s and 70s, the venue was home to It’s a Knockout once a week. Between 2008 and 2010, the then Scarborough Borough Council spent £3.5 million restoring the theatre to its former glory, and it was officially re-opened on May 20, 2010 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh – about as ringing an endorsement as it’s possible to get!
