Bethesda has not only acknowledged that exploration in Starfield can be dull but has said it’s meant to be that way for the sake of realism.
but even enthusiastic fans have been concerned that exploration isn’t quite as rewarding as previous Bethesda games, such as Skyrim and Fallout.
Ordinary planets, that aren’t heavily populated, often don’t have any real points of interest, beyond resources, and so while they’re all relatively large open world areas there’s rarely much reward for exploring them. According to Bethesda that’s not only on purpose but is meant to underline the grounded science of the game. ‘Everyone’s concerned that empty planets are going to be boring. But when the astronauts went to the moon, there was nothing there. They certainly weren’t bored,’ said managing director Ashley Cheng.
‘The point of the vastness of space is you should feel small. It should feel overwhelming,’ said Cheng. They also insist that not every planet ‘is supposed to be Disney World.’ There’re some very obvious differences between NASA astronauts taking part in one of the most momentous events in human history and playing a video game, where you’re visiting the tenth planet in a row with nothing on it, but director Todd Howard agrees with Cheng.
