Many MPs believe the Government has finally got its act together after a bumpy first few months in office - but there are sceptics within Labour who are unconvinced
Labour has tried to get onto the front foot this week with plans for housing, prisons, energy and a visit to Brussels for the Chancellor. But some insiders have doubts over the PM’s leadershipThis week, that changed: the Government launched a flurry of activity designed to show that almost six months after winning power, it is now fully up and running.travelled to Brussels to join a meeting of EU finance ministers as part of the ongoing “reset” of post-Brexit relations.
Earlier this month, Starmer set out his “plan for change” with six “milestones” that he intends to deliver before the next election, building on the five “missions” that underpinned the last Labour manifesto. Some MPs are sceptical about the messaging deployed by the Prime Minister – one said: “Language like ‘missions’ and ‘milestones’, who talks like that? It isn’t human. It’s not cutting through on the doorstep.
One area where delivery may be possible sooner rather than later is improved relations with the EU. During her jaunt to Brussels this week, the Chancellor made a coded plea for European leaders to be as flexible as possible about boosting ties with Britain despite the Government’s pledge to stay out of the single market and customs.
