faces fresh pressure to scrap the two-child benefit cap on welfare benefits after the SNP announced plans to table an amendment on the issue in the upcoming King’s Speech.
“The two-child cap is pushing thousands of Scottish children into poverty – and scrapping it is the bare minimum the Labour Party Government must do if it is serious about tackling poverty,” he stated. The effort is being led by backbenchers John McDonnell and Kim Johnson, who are reportedly drafting an amendment on the issue separate from the one being considered by the SNP.said to be in talks about how best to pressure the new Government into making a move on the policy
Among the measures expected to be in the speech include a bill to boost housebuilding as part of Labour’s pledge to build 1.5 million homes over the next five years, as well as legislation to give local mayors more powers over policy areas such as transport, energy and skills. Alongside scrapping the two-child benefit cap, the SNP is also calling on Labour to match Scottish Child Payment, brought in by the Scottish government, UK-wide by increasing the child element of Universal Credit by £26.70 per child per week.
