If the Prime Minister can’t inspire the country, some of his colleagues could step up

No one seriously thinks Starmer would be forced out. But MPs are spending more time discussing who might eventually take over the Labour flame just needs to get through a final round of Prime Minister’s Questions next week before making his debut at Liaison Committee, the most formidable of Parliament’s select committees, where the Labour leader will be grilled on how his Government is doing.

The polls are not yet moving in the right direction. Starmer’s approval ratings are far from impressive and there are concerns in government departments that the need for a speech has seen Starmer announce targets that have not been properly thought through. If Starmer can’t inspire the country, some of his colleagues could step up to the plate. There was a hint of what could be to come last week atas the winner of “politician of the year”. In her acceptance speech, Rayner joked to Streeting: “You know we’re in competition.” It was taken in the room as reference to potential likely successors to Starmer in the future.
