In Tuesday’s speech Sir Keir will seek to persuade jaded voters that Labour can be trusted, following criticism that the party is simply seeking to benefit from the Conservatives’ unpopularity rather than setting out a positive vision. He is expected to contrast his approach not only with the Conservatives but also with his predecessors at the head of Labour, saying that he leads “a changed Labour party, no longer in thrall to gesture politics, no longer a party of protest… Those days are done. We will never go back.”Sir Keir will claim “the tide is turning” on nationalism after Labour’s landslide victory in the Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election last week.
