Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said in his Lord Mayor's Banquet speech that the UK would move closer to the EU as well as strengthening ties with the US.

Keir Starmer vowed to oversee 'closer collaboration' with the EU today under his drive to 'reset' post-Brexit relations with Brussels .

The President invited the Prime Minister to attend a session of the informal meeting of the EU leaders in Brussels. A No10 spokeswoman said: 'In their first meeting, the two leaders affirmed the intention to strengthen the relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union, agreeing on the vital importance of closer collaboration between like-minded partners at an increasingly volatile time for the world.'

Sir Keir and Mr Costa are expected to meet in Downing Street on Thursday afternoon to discuss the Prime Minister's hopes for a closer relationship with the EU after the acrimony of the Brexit battles. As well as the post-Brexit relationship, the talks between Sir Keir and Mr Costa could cover wider global issues including the situation in Syria.

She told them that ‘breaking down barriers to trade’ would be a key goal in future talks to boost economic growth on both sides of the Channel. But ahead of the summit, Spain’s Cabinet Minister for the economy and trade, Carlos Cuerpo Caballero, warned greater market access would come at a price.
