Discover scenic canal walks and picturesque spots in Greater Manchester to invigorate your New Year.
There’s no better way to start the New Year than with a bracing walk outside. The crisp, fresh air blows away the old cobwebs and any hangovers from the celebrations of the night before. A walk beside the water is one way to leave you feeling refreshed, and restore a sense of calm as we head into 2025. Greater Manchester has no shortage of lakes, canals and rivers to choose from, all offering relaxing strolls with waterside views.
One of the most scenic stretches of canal is at Marple Locks in Stockport. It looks particularly stunning on a crisp winter’s day when the water is frozen after a heavy frost. Either way you’ll be rewarded with gorgeous scenery and views that will leave you inspired for the year ahead. One of its hidden gems is the Grade II-listed iron bridge, which was built in 1813 and crosses the River Goyt. Next to the park is Marple Locks, where you’ll find an impressive flight of 16 locks spread over the course of one mile. Keep following the canal north and the breathtaking sight of Marple Locks will greet you, the highest aqueduct in England. For a longer walk, you can follow the Peak Forest Canal south towards the picturesque Bugsworth Basin in Buxworth, approximately seven miles away, taking you all the way to the borders of the Peak District. It’s a lengthy but straightforward walk along the towpath. But the beauty of the canal walk is you can make it as long or as short as you lik
