Family doctor Kenny Lin argues that shared decision-making is a better approach to early breast cancer screening than the USPSTF's recommendation to begin mammography at age 40 for all women.

I am a family physician and associate director of the Lancaster General Hospital Family Medicine Residency , and I blog atOn the one hand, I'm sure that many of my family medicine colleagues are relieved by the USPSTF's decision; screening messages are less complicated when guidelines agree.

In comparison, on the basis of models incorporating updated breast cancer incidence, the current Task Force projected that for every 1000 women who start screening at age 40 instead of age 50 years, 1.5 additional breast cancer deaths will be prevented, at the cost of 519 more false-positive test results, 62 more benign breast biopsies, and two more women being overdiagnosed and overtreated.
